New research suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
